Bear cub rescued from trap in Tumakuru

A bear cub that was caught in a trap was rescued by the forest department personnel near Chikka Agrahara village in Sira taluk of Tumakuru district on Tuesday.

A bear and its cub had come in search of food near Chikka Agrahara village when the cub got caught in the trap that had been kept for wild boars by a farmer in his field. The farmer, who saw the bear cub caught in the trap, informed the forest department.

Range Forest Officer of Sira taluk Suresh told The Hindu that the department personnel, on visit to the site, noticed the mother bear sitting near the cub caught in the trap. After chasing away the mother, the personnel tranquilised the cub, aged around six months. Veterinary doctor Murali then freed it from the trap.

Mr. Suresh said the mother bear was watching the cub from a distance. After the cub regained consciousness and was fit to move, it was released near the mother bear, he added.
