Pune: Hitting out at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the farm loan waiver, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said the government has paid lip service to farmers.

“The promise of waiver appears to be a sham. The Chief Minister had promised a complete loan waiver. Then he changed tack, and now, no relief seems to be coming the farmers’ way. It remains to be seen how many ultimately benefit from [the government’s] announcements,” Mr. Pawar said in Ahmednagar district.

The NCP supremo attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr. Fadnavis over the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. “The cost of the project is pegged at ₹1.1 lakh crore of which the State has to bear a good amount. However, of the 12 stations, only four fall in Maharashtra.”

Only a little more than 150 km of the rail line will be running through Maharashtra, he said, while more than 350 km will be in the PM’s home state. “It appears that only the people of Gujarat are set to reap benefits from this project.”

Mr. Pawar further said that a bullet train between Mumbai and Delhi would have made more sense. “Even a project linking Pune with Chandrapur would have helped the people. Unfortunately, the Chief Minister appears to have given little or no thought while acquiescing to the idea of the bullet train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai.”
